Committee discusses athletic-field uses, Glen Mary Pool and Harborview pier expansion

At its Feb. 2, 2026 meeting the Bar Harbor Parks and Recreation Committee solicited and recorded several planning ideas for town parks and facilities, including expanded athletic uses, public art, a Park Street summer connection, completion of the Glen Mary Pool and an expansion at Harborview Park funded by cruise‑ship funds.

Ann Tikkanen proposed adding sports such as kickball, lacrosse and soccer and turning the Athletic Field into a multipurpose space; she also suggested underground parking with sports fields above and adding a mural to the Athletic Field comfort station, noting the facility was designed by Stewart Brecher Architecture. Erin Cough suggested creating a map of town parks and adding artwork to Barker Park and Howe Park; she also suggested closing Park Street in summer to provide a direct connection between the YMCA and the fields.

Jeff Dobbs urged finishing Glen Mary Pool and reported that the Parks and Recreation Committee and the Harbor Committee have approved a Harborview Park expansion to add a two‑layer pier, a dinghy float and kayak storage, and that cruise‑ship funds were set aside to fund that expansion. The minutes record that the Glen Mary neighborhood met and prepared ideas related to the pool and would like to share them with the committee.

Committee members did not take formal policy votes on these planning suggestions during the meeting; the topics were recorded as committee input for future planning. The minutes note upcoming community events and list tentative future meeting dates; staff and committee members will consider these suggestions in subsequent planning work.
