"That turf is past its life," said Adam Curico, the city's building maintenance superintendent, describing worn seams, exposed black padding and areas repeatedly repaired with patchwork. Curico told the commission the procurement produced a low bid of $249,964 from Stewart Contracting using ATS Turf products; the next bid was about $117,000 higher.
Curico said lead times for ordering turf are two to three weeks and that contractors plan to use removable, pre-cut sections in high-wear zones — an industrial Velcro-style system similar to replacement panels used in ballfields — so future repairs will be faster and less visually patchy. He noted the newer turf products are more durable than those installed a decade ago and could extend replacement cycles.
The commission heard this as an informational item; Curico said staff will present the contract award to the City Council for approval and request use of Parks capital funds to cover the $249,964 cost. The commission did not take a formal vote on the contract at this meeting.
If approved by council, Curico said crews and the vendor would schedule installation following product delivery. Commissioners asked questions about wear patterns and maintenance; Curico said the removable-panel approach aims to reduce future preventive-maintenance costs and staff time.
The commission approved routine meeting minutes earlier in the session and adjourned at the end of the agenda. The council consideration of the McEuen turf contract was described as the next procedural step.
