The Alma City Council on Sept. 17 approved two special designated liquor license (SDLL) applications and authorized staff to solicit bids and undertake safety and repair projects.
Council approved a SDLL for the Bait Box for a wedding reception at the Johnson Center on Oct. 11, 2025, and a SDLL for Fisherman's Corner for a tailgate event on Oct. 18, 2025. Both motions passed on roll call votes with Council Members Mahalek, Casper and Moulton voting yes.
Council approved specifications for a three-year cleaning contract covering the Johnson Center, City Office and City Airport, with the contract term to be reviewed annually and the current contract noted to end in September 2025; the council directed staff to put the specifications out for bid.
Responding to public concerns about heavy traffic and children crossing near schools, the council approved crosswalk painting on Fifth Street, Division, John and Jewell Streets. The city administrator also presented a list of proposed repairs and projects, including replacement of the Hoesch Library skylight (waiting on delivery), concrete and curbing at the auditorium, an electric-vehicle charging station, repainting of the Parrot Theater, maintenance at the city pool, and specifications/bids for sewer lift station work. The placement of potential pickleball courts was mentioned for future consideration.
Council adjourned at 7:00 p.m. and directed staff to proceed with bid solicitation and project planning as recorded in the minutes.
