Board ratifies hires, payroll and expenses; superintendent reports 409 enrolled and COPS grant camera installation underway

The Santa Cruz Valley Union High School District Governing Board approved multiple personnel actions and ratified July payroll and expense vouchers at its Aug. 13, 2025 regular meeting.
The board approved hiring Servando Melendez as bus driver and facilities assistant; Paul Rodriguez as a van driver; Jennifer Montijo as a paraprofessional; Sherman Cheek as an emergency teacher; Dahlia Alaniz as a van driver; Lisette Portillo as a facilities assistant; Maria Fuentes as a food service worker; and Veronica Villescaz as a substitute teacher and van driver. The board accepted the resignation of school nurse Angelica Rochin and approved Jesse Salazar and Devin Neal as volunteer football coaches. Ralph Moran moved to approve Personnel Items H.1–H.12; Jordan Davis seconded. The motion carried unanimously (Olveda, Davis, Moran – aye).
Under consent items the board ratified auxiliary operations and student activities expenditures for July 2025 and approved payroll and expense vouchers listing total payroll of $36,883.73, total expenses of $337,325.69, and a grand total of $374,209.42. The board also approved the Regular Governing Board Meeting Minutes from July 9, 2025.
Superintendent Chrystal Reyes delivered the monthly report to the board and provided operational updates: district enrollment is 409 students; 60 students attended Senior Orientation night; 25 students are enrolled in the Center for Success online course aligned to classroom curriculum; installation of a new camera system is underway as the first and largest phase of the district’s COPS grant; and outreach regarding the bus lot returned notice that funding is not available, leaving that project on hold. Reyes said staff walkthroughs showed the new cellphone policy is being observed, with two phones confiscated.
Athletic Director Michael Ibarra announced a football scrimmage scheduled for Aug. 14 at Benjamin Franklin and noted that AIA passes are now digital. The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
