Treasurer Tashia Butterfield presented an update on city gas rates at the Alma City Council meeting on Oct. 15, 2025, laying out residential and commercial charge components, supplier direct costs, and personnel costs for the gas department. Butterfield told the council the city had not raised base rates in about a ten-year period and noted auditors’ observations of deficits.
Council Members Joel Wheeler and Chris Mahalek focused on restructuring personnel costs as a possible way to address deficits. Council Member Larry Casper expressed concern about raising rates for residents on fixed incomes. After discussion the council voted to table the rate review and directed staff to gather additional information and options for council consideration.
