Eliot commission eyes wayfinding, boardwalks and conservation overlay; budget and outreach plans discussed

The Eliot Conservation Commission used its May 6 round-table to review local grant follow-up, zoning implementation assistance and outreach plans tied to its remaining fiscal budget.
Chair Peter Egelston reported he had submitted a York River Watershed Grant application for wayfinding signage on town forest land adjacent to York Pond and for boardwalks in wetter trail sections; projects would begin July 1 if funded. Commissioners discussed potential funding sources for deed research and surveys and noted Great Works Regional Land Trust contact Jill Crosbie may have cost estimates for survey work.
Vice Chair Kari Moore suggested a possible conservation overlay as a fit for a PREP-related grant opportunity and offered to reach out to Beginning with Habitat for support. Commissioners also discussed assistance to the Planning Board on implementing wetland mitigation language in a mixed-use zoning district, with Kari offering to draft a framework for the June meeting.
On outreach, Kari noted the ECC budget must be spent by the end of June and proposed printing large-format maps and an information packet on stormwater and conservation options. The commission plans a tent at the June 9 election and participation in Eliot Connects and Eliot Festival Days to distribute materials and solicit community input. Lisa Wise noted that Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission staff will attend the June meeting to present the Open Space Plan Viewer.
No votes were recorded on these items at the May meeting; commissioners assigned follow-up research and outreach tasks in anticipation of June agenda work.
