The Waukesha City Plan Commission on Feb. 26 approved a final site plan and architectural review for a city flood‑mitigation project located on land owned by the school district west of North High School along Michigan Avenue. The project will enlarge and relocate an existing drainage channel, create a detention pond deeded to the city, remove an overflow parking area to make room for the pond and reconfigure circulation so Cheryl Lane becomes an exit‑only route for construction staging and permanent traffic flow.
Staff explained the main channel would be moved to the west property edge, daylight to the west and then follow the existing flow off the property under Michigan Avenue. The relocation will allow the school district to regain use of athletic fields and add a soccer field where the ditch had previously limited usable land. Cheryl Lane will be reconstructed and serve as a one‑way exit when construction is complete.
Commissioners asked if the detention pond would be fenced because of the large concentration of high school students nearby; staff said the current plans do not include a fence but noted a setback between the sidewalk and the pond’s drop off. The commission approved the final site plan unanimously.
Staff recommended approval subject to addressing any remaining engineering comments and coordinating construction staging with the school district. The detention facility will be deeded to the city upon completion and the project is part of an ongoing West Side flood‑mitigation effort.
