John Reed of the Northwest Nebraska Development Corporation (NNDC) updated the Chadron City Council on local economic development efforts, including a potential interest in the Safeway property and plans to host a western Nebraska "six regions, one Nebraska" housing roadshow in Chadron later this summer.
Reed said he met earlier in the day with a party expressing interest in the Safeway property; he described the potential as a long process but a positive development if it advances. He noted he is working under a non-disclosure agreement with Safeway's broker and is vetting prospects to make sure they have viable business plans before introducing them to the community.
On housing, Reed said the roadshow will bring state and regional partners to the Platte Valley Bank conference center in Chadron to outline funding sources, builder contacts and successful local models. "We're ready to help businesses grow," Reed said, adding NNDC has new online housing resources and is engaging with sister agencies to promote local projects.
Reed also discussed small-business outreach, social-media engagement and a few private recruitment leads (including interest in converting a vacant Pizza Hut location to a retro-style concept). Council members encouraged local, qualified buyers for the Safeway site and welcomed NNDC's support on housing and workforce discussions.
