Camp Verde awarded $1.08 million AZDEMA grant for Verde Lakes Drive flood study

Town Manager Miranda Fisher reported that the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (AZDEMA) has awarded the Town of Camp Verde a grant of $1,084,340 to fund a Verde Lakes Drive Flood Study.
The project scope covers flood-control planning, engineering analysis and preliminary design work intended to support future construction and mitigation improvements, Fisher said. She added the grant requires a 25% local match, which staff said will be funded through Yavapai County Flood Control funds allocated annually; Fisher indicated there were no concerns about meeting the match requirement.
Fisher also said the Verde Lakes Drive project has been selected to advance for consideration for Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) through Senator Kelly's office. "If awarded," Fisher told the council, "Town staff will seek to convert that funding for construction since the required study will be done using the DEMA funds." The council did not take further action on the item at the meeting.
Why it matters: the study will produce engineering and planning information needed to design future flood-mitigation work on and around Verde Lakes Drive, a step local officials say is necessary before seeking construction funds. The selection for potential CDS funding means construction dollars could be available later, but any such award is not guaranteed and would require separate approval.
Next steps: staff will proceed with the AZDEMA-funded study and report back to the council on study milestones and any subsequent funding opportunities related to CDS or other sources.
