Van Buren County schedules follow-up on dam erosion; engineer to notify landowners

The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors met in joint session with the Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioners on Aug. 20, 2024, in Keosauqua to discuss erosion at Site 15, located in Section 11-T67N-R9W. County Engineer Ryne Thornburg reported that erosion has developed around Site 15’s emergency spillway and that similar maintenance concerns exist at Site 13 in Section 12-T67N-R9.
Thornburg said both Site 15 and Site 13 have fences along the south sides of the dams where landowners have allowed brush to grow up in the fencerows, creating a maintenance and safety concern. "Site 15 and Site 13 have fences on the south side with brush growth in the fencerows that needs to be addressed," County Engineer Ryne Thornburg reported.
Following discussion, the board and Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioners scheduled a follow-up meeting for Sept. 9, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the 1st Floor District Courtroom. That meeting will include the Board of Supervisors, the Soil & Water Commissioners and State NRCS engineering staff to review proposed solutions for the erosion at Site 15.
By consensus the group directed Thornburg to send letters to the landowners of the affected parcels requesting removal of brush from the fencerows. The letters will be sent under the authority of the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors and the Soil & Water Conservation District, as recorded in the meeting notes.
