Board approves road renaming, authorizes liens and tax‑certificate assignments

The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors on June 24 approved several property and roads actions, including a formal name change for a county road, authorization of liens for delinquent sewer accounts, and acceptance of compromise payments on two tax sale certificates.
County Engineer Ryne Thornburg presented road matters and the board approved naming a stretch formerly known as Lark Avenue as 300th Road (motion by Meek, seconded by House). Thornburg also instructed the appraiser to value three county‑owned parcels along Route W46 separately, using the highest‑and‑best‑use approach.
County Treasurer Linda Whitten told the board two parties have been competing to outbid one another for five certificates tied to Burlington Northern railroad right‑of‑way (taxes outstanding since a 1992 tax sale); the board asked Whitten to consult the county attorney on assignment procedures. Separately, the board accepted two compromise payments and authorized assignment and abatement of penalties: Certificate #2022-00384 (Lot 8 Block 13, Bonaparte) — $146 from Brad Pritchard; Certificate #2023-00004 (Mt Sterling Lots 4&5 Block 2) — $160 from Brad Pritchard.
On a motion by Meek, seconded by House, the board authorized the county treasurer to place special assessment liens against six properties in the former city of Mt. Sterling for delinquent sewer accounts; amounts due were recorded in the minutes ranging from $133.84 to $278.04. Ayes: 2; Richards not present.
The board also acknowledged a one‑year Manure Management Plan update from Darrick McLain (Site #2 — Facility #69425).
