Painesville City Council voted May 18 to allow Lake Erie College to have Campus Drive included as an alternate in the city’s 2026 asphalt resurfacing contract and to award that portion of the work to the low bidder, Vallejo Company.
City Manager Doug Lewis said the college independently solicited bids and asked the City to include the work as an alternate in the City’s resurfacing package; the city’s bid from Vallejo Company came in lower, at about $80,000. He emphasized the college will be solely responsible for inspections and maintenance of Campus Drive and that the City will not provide a warranty for that work. Lake Erie College must pay the full contract amount plus a 10 percent contingency up front before the City will award that portion of the contract.
Council suspended the rules and approved the resolution by unanimous roll call (recorded as RESOLUTION 32‑26). The minutes note that the college sought to vet whether independent bidding would yield a lower cost and that the college decided to have the City award the work when the Vallejo bid was lowest.
Next steps: the college will provide funds as required and the City will award that portion of the resurfacing contract to Vallejo Company under the terms described in the meeting record.
