Van Buren supervisors set public hearing to accept sealed bids for railroad right-of-way parcel near Bentonsport

The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors voted July 8 to accept sealed bids for a county-owned parcel of railroad right-of-way near Bentonsport and set a public hearing to open bids on Aug. 12.
County Auditor Lisa Plecker told the board that County Conservation Director Richard Daugherty had found no additional records clarifying how the county acquired Parcel #000560735462100 (located south and east of the Route J40 curve before J40 enters Bentonsport). Plecker asked whether the board wanted a survey completed so the parcel could be sold. The board decided to take sealed bids; each bid must include the cost for a licensed surveyor chosen by the bidder. Transfer to the winning bidder will occur after the survey plat has been recorded in the Van Buren County Recorder’s office.
On motion by Richards, seconded by Meek, the board set a public hearing for 9:05 a.m. on Aug. 12, 2024, in the board of supervisors’ office to open sealed bids. The motion passed with three ayes.
The board did not specify a minimum bid amount in the record and directed the auditor to proceed with public notice and bid procedures. The decision opens the process for potential private purchase, with bidders bearing the cost of surveying and finalizing the legal transfer only after a recorded survey plat.
