Police Chief Dan Waterman presented department awards at the May 18 City Council meeting, recognizing officers for investigative work, traffic enforcement and acts of bravery.
Chief Waterman named the department’s Top Five Officers of the Year and singled out Dallas McCloud as Officer of the Year — noting that McCloud earned the distinction for a third consecutive year, the first time in department history it has occurred. The Chief also presented a Unit Citation to members of the Painesville City Detective Bureau — recognizing several detectives and lieutenants for their collective investigative work over the past three years — and issued a Gallantry Award to officers who were assaulted with a sledgehammer while protecting a woman and her children.
Chief Waterman framed the awards around proactive policing and successful investigations, saying the top officers were recognized for “their focus on removing drugs and weapons from city streets through proactive and preventative activity.” Several officers were also cited for high numbers of OVI arrests and other distinguished service honors.
The awards were presented during the special presentation portion of the agenda; Council and staff recognized the honorees in the meeting minutes.
