'Liberty Field' supported; commission sets compliance deadlines for two properties

At its July 16 meeting the South Dennis Historic District Commission voiced support for a Select Board request to name a town-owned parcel at 485 Main Street "Liberty Field," citing recent genealogical research identifying Revolutionary War veterans in the adjacent cemetery.
"They discovered there are seven Revolutionary War vets in that [cemetery]," the chair said while reading the Select Board notice; commissioners signaled concurrence and agreed to provide comment to the Select Board, with no formal objection recorded.
Members also addressed several enforcement matters. The commission set a Dec. 15, 2025 deadline for the owner of 5 Old Bass River Road to return the house to white, replace missing shutters and restore a small front picket fence after an after-the-fact paint violation. Commissioners debated whether six months was sufficient but settled on Dec. 15 and said the owner should apply sufficient coats to fully cover the existing blue paint.
The commission also set an Oct. 30, 2025 deadline for 14 Hidden Shores to replace shutters agreed to in prior ownership transfer conditions; commissioners said owners may request an extension with justification if needed.
Finally, the chair reported he had forwarded multiple neighbor complaints about 194 Main Street (including trash, unpermitted conversions, and overgrown yards) to the town building commissioner for inspection and possible referral to health or zoning enforcement.
The commission asked staff to draft and send the formal deadline letters to owners and to notify the Select Board of the commission's concurrence on the naming proposal.
