Forest Service warns of severe drought and boosts temporary fire crews near Roosevelt Estates

Kelly Jardine of the Forest Service told residents at the March 12 meeting that the region is experiencing severe drought conditions and elevated fire danger. He said the Forest Service had brought in temporary fire trucks and crews to increase response capacity while the area remains dry.
Jardine described a green-waste fire pit available to residents and noted that spring-break visitation has increased at the nearby lake. He encouraged vigilance and attendance at Heritage Days at Tonto National Monument this coming weekend.
When a resident asked why the Grapevine Airstrip gate was locked, Jardine said the Forest Service maintains a stockpile at the site and that the airstrip is a backcountry strip with restricted access. The Forest Service and local fire personnel also reminded residents that staffing is limited and urged continued caution during the drought.
A separate open-discussion item from Tonto Basin Fire reiterated limited staffing and the need for fire-safety vigilance in the community.
