County staff told residents they developed a draft map of culverts in Roosevelt Estates and discovered that many culverts are potentially made with asbestos. Staff said the county will hire crews to remove and dispose of asbestos-containing culverts safely and will prioritize replacements for the most-needed locations, scheduling the remaining work quarterly.
Joel McDaniel ("Jammer") of Gila County Roads said the county is "tweaking" the culvert policy and will continue to monitor tie-ins at Stagecoach. He also said blading and other maintenance will begin in October and that crews have scheduled equipment (a skid-steer) to clean drainages around the community.
Staff emphasized that public outreach will occur before any culvert removal work begins so residents are informed about timing and safety procedures. No cost estimates or firm project schedules beyond the quarterly sequencing were provided at the meeting.
