Deputy Director of Planning & Zoning Karen Wegleitner summarized the application, which seeks authorization under SDCL 45-6B for surface-mining activities on property described as the SW1/4 of Section 33, T102N, R60W of the 5th P.M., Davison County. Wegleitner told the commission the Planning & Zoning office had received no letters or phone calls about the request.
Commissioners said neighbors attended the meeting to learn more but that key information remained unaddressed because no company representative was present. Facing unanswered questions about the proposal, Commissioner Steve Thiesse moved, and Commissioner Mike Blaalid seconded, to table the application to the commission's May 6, 2025 meeting. The roll-call vote recorded Haines, Thiesse, Gosmire, Bainbridge, Nebelsick and Blaalid as voting aye and Anderson as voting nay; the motion carried.
The item will return to the commission on May 6 so commissioners can hear from the applicant and consider documentation or responses to the neighbors' concerns. No formal conditions or findings were adopted at the April 1 meeting.
