The Quartzsite Town Council voted unanimously to adopt Ordinance 26-02 (Chapter 37), which establishes the Courtside Housing Authority and designates the council to serve as the authority’s board. The ordinance was presented by staff as the product of prior council discussions and as a tool to address local housing issues in partnership with private-sector stakeholders.
Staff told the council the housing authority is intended to address a broad range of local housing issues rather than solely Section 8 or federal-assisted housing. The town manager said staff has already contacted the University of Arizona’s Master of Public Administration program to seek student and faculty assistance for initial research and expects presentations and involvement from the Arizona Department of Housing in coming weeks.
During public comment a resident, Bridal Lucas, asked whether creating the authority would add new salaries; staff replied the initial work will be research and coordination and said no additional salaries are planned at this stage. Because this item is an ordinance, the council conducted a roll-call vote. Mayor Simpson, Vice Mayor Hammond, and the listed council members each voted "Aye," and the ordinance carried.
Staff said the next steps include scheduling presentations and research assistance and returning with more detailed recommendations for the authority’s operations and any future budget requests.
