Work session: Cusseta–Chattahoochee panel sets road priorities, schedules CUP review and plans HB581 outreach

County leaders used a Jan. 27 work session to review department operations and to set follow-ups for land-use procedures, road repairs and outreach on state tax legislation.
Department updates: Recreation and parks updates noted ongoing basketball and upcoming baseball seasons (staffing and field repair needs were raised), permitting and code enforcement provided routine updates, utilities staff reported a repaired electrical issue at Well #4 and work to raise hydrants, animal-control reported an uptick in stray dogs, and public works reported a failing water-tower floor needing replacement and progress on fiber locates and staff promotions.
Roads and funding: Commissioners discussed using 2024 LMIG funds to repair Friendship Road, identified Liberty Hill Road as an adjacent priority, and asked staff to add road projects to future work-session agendas. The board agreed to place a 2025 SPLOST bank-account item on the Feb. 4 regular meeting agenda.
Planning and zoning: The commission directed staff to continue reviewing the conditional-use-permit (CUP) process and to invite the Planning & Zoning Board to an evening meeting on Feb. 24 to consider possible changes, tweak ambiguous language, and schedule public hearings as needed. Planning & Zoning also signaled interest in reducing its membership from seven to five members; the board will place reappointments for Randy Register, Teresa Smith and Willie Brown on the Feb. 4 agenda.
HB581 and public outreach: Commissioner Gerald Douglas asked about HB581; County Manager Thomas Weaver said remaining opted-in likely benefits the county but will require a special election to adjust a sales tax, probably in November, and staff will prepare informational materials for the public.
Executive session and adjournment: The work session entered executive session to discuss legal, personnel and real-estate matters and reconvened to adjourn; minutes were certified at the Feb. 4 meeting.
