A Sunoco representative told the Upper Makefield Township Board of Supervisors on June 16 that recent monitoring-well drilling near Glenwood Drive and Walker has found recoverable free product and will prompt a formal remedial-action plan.
Dave Fenimore, introduced by the board to provide an update on Sunoco activities, said the current phase of monitoring-well drilling is complete and that some of the new wells encountered recoverable free product. He said the remedial-action plan is due for completion this Friday and will be submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and posted on Energy Transfer’s and DEP’s websites, which will begin a 60-day public comment period.
Fenimore said the plan envisions a multi-phase approach: pumping selected wells to recover product, water and vapor, and conveying the collected material to a treatment system. He described the next step as a 30-day pilot test, intended to determine whether sufficient recoverable material remains to justify full-scale remediation; if DEP and township approvals are obtained, that pilot could begin in late August or September.
The representative said details remain subject to regulatory review and that staff and Energy Transfer will meet with township personnel to discuss implementation logistics. The board did not take action on the remediation plan at the meeting; Fenimore said that posting the plan will start the formal public comment window.
The update provides a near-term schedule residents can watch: plan posting and a 60-day comment period, followed—if approved—by a 30-day pilot in late summer. The township did not provide cost estimates or specific well counts in the presentation.
