Residents and nonprofits address council: street-safety pleas, service updates and event announcements

At the start of the Aug. 25 meeting several members of the public and nonprofit representatives addressed the Lancaster City Council.
A representative of Saint Vincent de Paul Outreach Center (speaker 8) described services at 1120 Randlett and thanked Council members Gooden Davis and Strain Burke for their involvement and the Lancaster Fire Department for assisting with unloading supplies. The representative noted partnership with Walmart and the center’s twice-monthly distribution model for qualified neighbors.
Resident Meryl Buss (speaker 9) described multiple vehicle accidents near her corner home on East Pleasant Run Road and asked the council to consider traffic-safety measures. "There is it's on a corner… I believe that road is 40 miles per hour. It's a residential area," she said, and suggested lowering the speed limit to 30–35 mph, adding stop signs or speed bumps and addressing recurring drainage and driveway grading issues that are damaging vehicles.
City staff (speaker 6) also used the public-comment segment to highlight upcoming city events and services: a Star Transit virtual meeting Aug. 29, TML Region 13 meeting Sept. 4 in Waxahachie, a low-cost vaccination and microchipping clinic Sept. 6, town hall kickoff Sept. 9, a civic leadership class beginning Sept. 11 and the Lancaster Fall Fiesta Sept. 13 with 36 confirmed vendors.
Council thanked speakers and directed staff to follow up on resident concerns through the appropriate departments. The public-comment remarks about traffic safety and recurring drainage issues were not acted on during the meeting; residents were advised to follow up with city staff and the appropriate departments for resolution.
