Butte-Silver Bow Parks & Recreation Director Shawn Fredrickson presented a $735,000 proposal on May 5 to restore Basin Creek Park’s lawn, replace dead trees, install irrigation, add an ADA-accessible pavilion and restroom facilities, improve lighting and security, and place interpretive signs as part of a historic-district improvement plan.
Fredrickson said the funds come through the BNRP (an offshoot of the Natural Resource Damage program) and that Great West Engineering was selected to proceed with contracted services. He cautioned that planned logging this summer will affect timing: the park is likely to remain closed through the summer while large trucks use access roads.
HPO Kate McCourt updated commissioners on the Basin Creek Caretaker’s House and related historic-site monitoring after recent logging activity. McCourt said mitigation measures have been recorded in a CU-R form, including cordoning off sensitive areas, removing a slash pile so small features are unobscured, and removing shrubs from a northern fire pit. She reported that, "once the slash pile was removed and small bits and pieces unobscured, there was no new damage to the listed historic features." A buried barrel mentioned in earlier reports has not been located.
Commissioners asked about coordination with the U.S. Forest Service on trailheads accessed from the park and about the length of the closure; Fredrickson said the Forest Service has been involved in conversations but final usage levels are not certain. Chairman Hinick urged careful integration of new pavilion designs so they fit the park setting.
The proposals and monitoring measures will return as staff follow up as needed; Great West Engineering is the selected design/construction firm for the work as presented.
