RSU 38 approves two additional remote learning days; officials outline operational rules

The RSU 38 School Board voted unanimously to add two remote learning days to the current school year after administrators said the district had used one emergency day and had one emergency day remaining.
The administration explained that a remote day is a recognized school day that can be called when needed; it does not automatically require making up time the way some traditional snow days do. Operationally, officials said remote days must be called with sufficient advance notice to ensure students can take a bag lunch home, and instruction should include a minimum of three hours of interaction adjusted for grade-level expectations.
Board members discussed the district calendar for next year and reported that they have worked with neighboring districts in planning. The administration said the next year’s proposed calendar builds in four emergency days to reduce the need for additional remote days in the future.
A motion to accept the administration’s proposal to add two remote learning days was moved, seconded and approved unanimously at the meeting.
