The RSU 38 School Board heard a budget update at its meeting, during which board members were told that the state’s FY27 ED279 allocation reduced the share of state funding by about 11 percent. Board members said the drop stems from how the state calculated the ED279 this year — a combination of higher property evaluations in some towns and lower student counts — and stressed the calculation’s effect on local budgets. The board said the numbers will make assembling the second draft of the FY27 budget more difficult and require more time for analysis.
Because of the complexity and the tight timeline created by the state’s release, the board agreed to reschedule the previously planned February 11 budget workshop to February 25 so the budget committee and administration can prepare a more complete second draft.
Board members emphasized that the ED279 is a state-issued revenue document that determines how education funding is split between state and local sources; the board said it will continue work with the budget committee and administrative staff to consider options before any final decisions are made.
The board did not adopt budget changes at this meeting; the rescheduled workshop on Feb. 25 is intended to guide next steps and any proposed adjustments to local contributions.
