Stillwater board approves expanded course offerings; schedules boundary review and hears Adventure Club update

The Independent School District 834 (Stillwater Area Public Schools) school board on Nov. 6 approved expanded high-school course offerings and discussed several program and governance items, including a scheduled review of elementary attendance boundaries tied to the opening of new Lake Elmo and Bayport elementary schools and an update on Adventure Club staffing, enrollment and waitlists.
The minutes record that at the Oct. 21 meeting board members reviewed 20 in-person and 9 online new course proposals intended to align offerings with student interests and postsecondary goals. Andrew Thelander moved to approve the expanded course offerings; Chris Lauer seconded the motion and the board carried it 7-0. The minutes further note that a proposed high-school online economics course will be brought to the board for approval on Nov. 18.
To prepare for openings of the new Lake Elmo and Bayport elementary schools, the district will review elementary attendance boundaries across the southern portion of the district with the goal of balancing enrollment and allowing room for future growth; that boundary plan is expected to come to the board for approval on Dec. 16. The board also received an informational update on Adventure Club staffing, enrollment and waitlist status; the minutes do not record any motion or vote on the program.
In a workshop portion the board discussed its committee structure and options for conducting governance work going forward and began discussing issues to include in the district’s legislative platform for the upcoming session.
