Planning board approves Home Healthcare occupancy in existing West Bath office

The West Bath Planning Board on April 8 unanimously approved an application allowing Home Healthcare to occupy 1,375 square feet of existing office space in a commercial building on the east end of the property. Applicant Chuck told the board the business would use the existing office and provide equipment and literature, and that the tenant mix would produce very little customer traffic.

The approval came after board members confirmed the application included six plan copies and an older survey. Chair Jim Williams and members said there were no proposed alterations to the building, that parking was adequate, and that the use appears permitted in the commercial zone. "Home Healthcare wants to occupy a space in my building," the applicant said during the presentation.

The board proceeded without conditions and a motion "to approve as presented" was made and seconded; the board voted in favor with no opposition. After the vote chair members confirmed staff would prepare the formal approval paperwork. The applicant was told to expect an occupancy/approval form from staff because the planning staff member Gab was not present at the meeting.

Why this matters: The approval allows a medical-related office to occupy an existing commercial unit without structural changes, a result the board said would preserve local business activity while avoiding additional permitting burdens. Board members also used the discussion to raise a broader question about streamlining change-of-use reviews for similar, low-impact businesses.

The board set a follow-up administrative step: staff will issue the approval paperwork to the applicant. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for May 13.
