Mendota Heights — The City Council reviewed a Planned Unit Development (PUD) amendment concept for signage at 750 North Plaza Drive on June 2, with staff and the applicant receiving advisory comments on sign operation, lighting and consistency with city standards.
Community Development Manager Sarah Madden explained that existing PUD rules lack explicit standards for electronic message signage and that a formal application would allow the Council to set conditions. Property owner Mike Sturdivant said current signs are outdated and the new proposal would include a pylon near Dodd Road with an electronic message component; he said the lower panel would list tenant names but could be used to advertise other events or businesses.
Council members signaled concerns about animation and brightness. Councilor Maczko and Councilor Lorberbaum asked that the sign avoid animation and be dimmable at night so light does not intrude on adjacent residential properties. Madden said formal review would enable placement of operational conditions and lighting limits.
No formal vote was taken; the item received advisory comments and the Planning Commission’s earlier guidance was commended for its thoroughness. The applicant indicated a late-summer to early-fall anticipated opening for a new tenant referenced in the presentation.
