Chisago City approves lease for Department of Public Safety to use council chambers beginning 2027

Chisago City Council voted Feb. 24 to approve a lease allowing the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) to use the city’s council chambers and conference room one day per week beginning January 2027 for written and road-testing driver services.
City Administrator John Pechman told the council DPS sought a long-term location after the City of Lindstrom informed DPS it would not renew its lease; Lindstrom later extended its lease through 2027 but DPS still desires a more permanent arrangement in Chisago City. Pechman said the lease rate would likely reflect basic cost recovery because the proposed user is another governmental entity; staff is seeking Lindstrom’s current lease rate for comparison but had not received it.
Council member Marie Rivers moved to approve the lease agreement for DPS to use city hall; Council member Mark Anderson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff will finalize the lease rate and execute the agreement. The proposed term would begin in January 2027.
