Kewanee adopts 2024 tax levy; city manager says corporate fund preserves flexibility for streets

Kewanee — The City Council adopted the ordinance establishing the 2024 tax levy payable in 2025 at the Dec. 9 meeting, approving the levy on a unanimous vote.
During discussion on Bill 24‑138 a resident, Adam Cernovich, asked why the levy appeared to allocate nothing specifically to Streets and Bridges. City Manager Gary Bradley replied that the relevant funds were placed in the corporate line “so that it is flexible,” and said that placement does not mean the city will not spend on streets and bridges but preserves flexibility to address unanticipated needs.
Councilmember Komnick moved to adopt the levy and Councilmember Faber seconded; the motion passed 4‑0. The council did not add a separate Streets and Bridges line item during the meeting; Bradley’s comments indicate the city intends to retain discretion over allocations within the corporate fund.
The tax levy must be filed with the Henry County Clerk. Council discussion did not specify exact dollar amounts for individual line items beyond what is recorded in the official levy ordinance approved at the meeting.
