Thomas Boxley told the board the CDC’s Money Talks financial education series will return for a second year with sessions at the Island Rec Center and partners including TD Bank and the town’s procurement and finance staff. Sessions will run 5:30–7 p.m.; the first session, on fraud awareness, is scheduled for July 22.
Boxley reported measurable outcomes from the prior year: “As a direct result of our activities in financial education last year, 3 new business checking accounts were opened, 2 merchant services point of sale accounts were opened, 2 personal checking accounts were opened and 1 $50,000 small business line of credit was open,” he said.
The year-two schedule includes topics and partners: Aug. 19 on lending and navigating access to capital, Sept. 16 in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Law on legal aspects of business ownership with a tax professional, Oct. 21 on nontraditional lending featuring Charleston-based Climb Fund, and Nov. 18 on town procurement featuring members of the town’s procurement and finance departments.
Board members pressed staff on follow-up and KPIs. Boxley said he has done some personal follow-up with businesses opened after the first series and will work to collect better outcome data, and board members urged formal tracking to measure program impact and to leverage local leadership and Chamber programs to expand outreach.
No vote was taken; staff said the series will proceed under the CDC’s existing program structure and that sign-up and advertising will be handled by the communications team.
