Hilton Head CDC says wayfinding project nearly complete; Apple OS update delays launch

Thomas Boxley, a CDC staff member overseeing the town’s wayfinding effort, told the board the project is nearing completion but has encountered a software integration delay tied to a new Apple operating system rollout. “This new update is said to be vertically integrating a lot of the systems,” Boxley said, and contractors are working through compatibility issues.
Boxley described the physical signs and the linked mobile experience: the left side of each sign will promote the downloadable Gullah app while the right side will present a site-specific experience, and each sign will carry a coordinating number that ties to the website. Signs will proceed to fabrication once the town’s internal review is complete.
He gave a projected launch target of Aug. 22 and said the communications team, led by Carolyn Grant, will prepare a press release and an official evening launch event at the Fishing Coop to support an ad campaign. “We will have an official launch at the Fishing Coop…so we can run a real full scale ad campaign,” Boxley said. The board was told members will receive calendar invitations for the launch.
A board member asked whether a recently installed Joe Pope Cemetery sign was part of the wayfinding project; Boxley said he did not install that sign but confirmed that cemeteries and churches are planned focus areas for phase 2. The board discussed honoring culturally significant sites later in the rollout.
The board did not take any formal vote on the wayfinding project during the meeting; Boxley said he will provide further updates as the vendor work and system testing conclude.
