RSU 23’s board voted unanimously May 9 to adopt a proposed $13,789,753.33 budget for the 2017–18 school year and approved vehicle procurements and financing tied to the district’s transportation needs.
The motion to adopt the proposed budget was made by Peter Flaherty and seconded by Michelle Violette and passed unanimously. The board then announced winning bids for district vehicles: three 81-passenger buses to W.C. Cressey at $83,418.00 each; one transit van to Yankee Ford at $31,582.00; and two minivans to Lee Dodge at $24,599.00 each. The board approved a lease-purchase agreement for the buses and vans in the amount of $79,826.41 per year on a motion by Michelle Violette, seconded by Peter Flaherty; that motion also passed unanimously.
Board chair David Boudreau and members framed the actions as part of broader fiscal stewardship. Finance committee reporting noted the district is "in the black" this year and credited careful oversight—naming Mrs. Cox for close budget monitoring—and community support that the board said has allowed funding for priorities such as a new playground.
Superintendent John Suttie reminded the public that a regional budget meeting for taxpayers is scheduled for Thursday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the Old Orchard Beach High School cafeteria, where voters will consider individual cost centers tied to the budget. The board adjourned at 6:46 p.m.
Next steps: the district will present cost-center voting at the May 18 meeting; the board previously set a timeline for finalizing administrative steps tied to vehicle delivery and financing.
