Old Orchard Beach — The RSU 23 school board met at Old Orchard Beach Town Hall on Dec. 21, 2017, where members unanimously approved minutes from the Nov. 16 meeting, elected board leadership and confirmed the district’s budget schedule.
Stu Hogan moved to accept the Nov. 16, 2017 minutes; Christopher LaSalle seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The board then reorganized: Stu Hogan nominated David Boudreau as school board chair, seconded by Peter Flaherty; the board voted unanimously to elect Boudreau. Boudreau subsequently nominated Peter Flaherty for vice-chair; the nomination, moved by Boudreau and seconded by Hogan, was also approved unanimously.
Superintendent John Suttie told the board he was “very proud of our staff and students” and offered holiday wishes as the district entered winter break. Suttie outlined the district’s budget timeline: principals will review budgets with the administration next month; department presentations will be held Feb. 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the LMS library; and the district budget workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m. He also said the January board meeting will be moved to Jan. 25.
Student representative Cierra Albert summarized recent student activity, saying students K–12 were starting their holiday vacation, winter sports were underway, and students had held an “ugly sweater” fundraiser to benefit the local food pantry. "On behalf of the student body I would like to wish everyone happy holidays and Happy New Year," she said.
In committee reports, Chair David Boudreau said the finance committee reviewed bids for a used van and noted that no bids were received for several old buses; the board will proceed with appropriate disposal. He said auditors identified items that have since been addressed and that he does not “expect any curveballs this year” as the district follows its budgeting plan. Peter Flaherty said the building committee will meet next month to review a state site visit and a cost analysis for potential budget items.
Board members exchanged brief remarks thanking staff and volunteers, praising recent concerts and PTO events, and welcoming the newly seated member. Committee assignments will be posted on the district website with contact email addresses for public access.
The meeting adjourned at 6:28 p.m. after a motion by Stu Hogan, seconded by Peter Flaherty, which passed unanimously. Minutes were prepared by Helene Stevens and filed by Superintendent John Suttie.
