RSU 23 board accepts four resignations, approves multiple new hires and a one-year leave

RSU 23’s board of directors unanimously accepted four staff resignations and approved a slate of new hires during its Aug. 17, 2017 meeting at Old Orchard Beach Town Hall.
The board voted to accept letters of resignation from Kaitlyn Austin, Amanda Dube, Amanda Ruel and Jennifer Darigan. Superintendent John Suttie addressed the resignations and praised the departing employees’ contributions, saying, “You can’t hold good people back and you want them to have good fulfilling jobs.”
In a single motion, the board approved appointments across the district: Dustin Levesque as LMS choral/music teacher; Sarah Welch as a .6 FTE speech-language pathologist; Anne Bischof as LMS 3–5 behavior resource teacher; Erin Wheaton as OOB High School resource teacher; Anthony Lucchese as OOB High School science teacher; Katelyn Bonney as JES kindergarten teacher; Natasha Jordan as JES pre-K teacher; Sarah Jaffe as OOB High School math teacher; Emma Horowitz as OOB High School English teacher; Graciela Lamy as a .6 FTE world language teacher; and Judith Milligan as LMS guidance counselor. The motion to approve the hires was made by Peter Flaherty, seconded by Stu Hogan and carried unanimously.
The board also approved, by unanimous vote, a one-year leave of absence for employee Jennifer Drapeau.
Superintendent Suttie reported additional staffing details in his presentation, including the district’s ability to hire a .6 FTE world language teacher for LMS and outreach to returning and new staff. He noted that staff who worked through the summer had been working “extremely hard” and reminded the board that the school year start date information was included in his update. The transcript lists “August 28th is the start of school,” then later references professional development days and an apparent inconsistency about student reporting (see note). He also said the new playground equipment has been ordered and will be installed as soon as vendor delivery allows.
The board’s motions on resignations, hires and the leave of absence were recorded as unanimous among the board members present.
