Douglas County proclaims Juneteenth; commissioners appoint crisis response advisory board members

The Douglas County Commission opened its June 17 meeting with a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth and invited Lawrence Juneteenth organizers to summarize community events planned for June 19–20.
"The awareness that happens in this community with Juneteenth is just incredible," Janine Coulter, vice president of Lawrence Juneteenth, told the commission, describing a free Freedom Day event June 19 at South Park with food, activities and student-essay readings, and a parade June 20 along 7th and Rhode Island. Coulter said volunteers provide activities at no cost and noted strong participation by young people.
After the proclamation, the commission considered appointments to the Douglas County Crisis Response Community Advisory Board. Commissioners approved a bundled motion to appoint David Dearborn, Stacy Chamberlain, Craig Susan Hayel, Shawn Phillips and Jolene Coen to the advisory board; a commissioner said the nominees were vetted by existing members of the advisory group.
County staff also highlighted a tenant eviction defense pilot and the Douglas County Historical Society’s annual report included in the packet. The commission confirmed a July work session next week and discussed the schedule for CFD1 budget hearings and the county’s overall budget timeline.
