Board adopts corrective action plan after state review of juvenile detention center school

The Jackson Public School District board approved a corrective action plan on June 6 to address findings from a Mississippi Department of Education compliance review of the Henley Young Patton Juvenile Detention Center School.
Dr. Thomas said the January 22, 2026 review found the detention‑center school lacked written policies and procedures governing educational services and the delivery of special education, which rendered the program non‑compliant with specified process standards. In response, district staff developed a comprehensive corrective framework that includes a formal board policy previously adopted at the prior meeting, a procedures manual covering instructional delivery, intake and records transfer, special education services and transition planning, and systems for monitoring implementation.
Board members asked whether Henley instructors are district employees; Dr. Thomas said all instructors are Jackson Public Schools employees. Trustees noted that the detention center itself is run by the county and that continued coordination will be necessary to ensure scholars have access to the district’s educational program.
A motion to approve the corrective action plan was moved and seconded and the board voted in favor.
