Midway adopts code requiring houses of worship and civic buildings to meet commercial architectural standards

Midway’s City Council on April 7 adopted an amendment to Subsection 16.13.370.A of the Municipal Code, applying the city’s commercial and resort architectural requirements to future houses of worship and civic buildings.
Planning Director Michael Henke outlined the proposed changes and noted the Planning Commission had unanimously recommended the amendment. During discussion council members asked whether public/quasi-public buildings beyond religious facilities should be included and whether the proposed language was too broad; Mr. Henke cautioned that including schools would not be within the city’s authority and suggested the VAC could provide recommendations for deviations.
Council Member Andy Garland moved to approve the code amendment; Council Member Kevin Payne seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The amendment requires future houses of worship and civic buildings to conform to the same architectural standards used for commercial and resort development; deviations will require application and review.
