Council approves six-month carryover of $500 dental/optical MOU increase for employees

The La Puente City Council approved a six-month extension to allow employees additional time to use a $500 increase added to the dental/optical plan as part of the city's MOU with SEIU.
Staff (speaker 9) said the MOU, approved on 01/13/2026 as resolution 26,596, increased the city contribution from $2,000 to $2,500 and provided language allowing unused amounts to carry over with council approval. SEIU requested a six-month extension for the additional $500. Staff told the council the funds were included in the budget and had already been paid to the plan provider; extending the carryover would leave only the additional $500 in the new-year allocation and it would be removed after the carryover period.
Councilmember David (speaker 4) moved to approve the extension for the $500 as recommended; the motion was seconded and passed on roll call. During roll call the clerk read votes including Mayor Klenakis and councilmembers Agudo, Mendoza and Keones recording yes votes.
Why it matters: The vote preserves short-term employee benefits negotiated in the MOU and clarifies the budget treatment for the added contribution. Staff indicated no additional funding appropriation is required because the amount was already budgeted.
