Beaufort County's Finance and Administration and Economic Development Committee approved an MOU authorizing the county administrator to execute an agreement with the College of Charleston to administer a $153,345 National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) grant to map shorelines and develop a suitability matrix for living shoreline approaches.
County staff member Miss Harriet told the committee the grant was awarded in March and the planning and zoning department wrote the application. "We do now, have everything confirmed with College of Charleston, to meet the grant requirement," she said, and noted the resolution and MOU are in the meeting backup.
A presenter identified as Mr. Merchant described the grant's purpose: "This grant is to map, to analyze our shorelines and map those areas that are most appropriate for the use of living shorelines. Because there's been a lot of promotion for living shorelines, but they're not appropriate for all types of shorelines... this is gonna further analyze that." He said the information "will be readily available to the public" and could serve as a guide for private property owners weighing options such as bulkheads or riprap.
Committee members asked whether results would be shared with the community; staff and the presenter said they would present findings to the public once the project is complete. The committee approved the MOU without objection. No roll-call vote or amendments were recorded in the committee meeting.
