Sheriff: attempted murder victim stable; suspect deceased after contact during manhunt

Sheriff Jeremy Breeze briefed the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors on a violent incident that occurred over Mother’s Day weekend. Breeze said deputies responded to a reported shooting in Supervisor Poe’s district; a resident was shot twice in the head, flown to a hospital and is in stable condition.
Breeze said investigators worked with law enforcement partners and were able to locate the suspect in a Stanislaus County parking lot. "Unfortunately during that contact, instead of complying, he took his own life," Breeze said. The sheriff said the case is effectively closed and thanked deputies, detectives and partner agencies for their rapid response.
The board thanked the sheriff and praised the department’s response, noting the strain such incidents place on small‑county resources. No further operational directions or funding requests were made in the public presentation that morning, and Breeze limited his remarks to the investigation status and thanks to staff.
