Commission approves invoices; hears recruitment, budget and recognition reports

The New Canaan Police Commission on June 17 voted to approve department invoices and employee reimbursements for uniforms, clothing and equipment, and heard updates on recruitment, the FY26 budget and several letters of appreciation recognizing officers’ service.
During discussion of invoices, a commissioner asked about a roughly $2,000 balance appearing on an athletic-shoe vendor statement; staff clarified that the balance reflected cumulative departmental charges rather than a single purchase. The motion to approve the invoices passed on a voice vote.
In a recruitment update, staff reported that an extended job offer was accepted by a candidate who chose employment with Norwalk. Sergeant Kalan was named as leading the department’s continued recruitment efforts to fill current vacancies; the chief noted the department is operating at minimum staffing about 77% of the time, with one officer in the academy and two on extended leave.
On finance, the chief reported FY26 spending at about 90% of budget for this time of year and said overtime remains an area of attention. The chief also said motor vehicle stops spiked in April due to work tied to a state "Click It or Ticket" grant overtime campaign.
The commission reviewed several letters of appreciation: one commended Officer Heights for handling a hostile crowd at a state playoff basketball game and securing arrest warrants; another, from Kelly Coughlin, recognized department participation in the Special Olympics torch run (nine runners and a bike officer); and the Wilton Police Department submitted a letter honoring Sergeant Galo for off-duty CPR that assisted in saving an elderly man. The transcript contained inconsistent spelling for some names; the commission did not alter the recognitions recorded in the letters.
The meeting concluded after routine business and an adjournment motion adopted by voice vote.
