Avoca council authorizes bids for ditch work, hears 911 address concerns and park updates

At its April 9 meeting, the Avoca town council authorized staff to advertise for bids to complete ditch and road work on Woods Lodge and Rader Road and discussed related public-safety and parks matters.
Alderman Jordan Sullivan reported flood damage to Woods Lodge and Rader Road and said he and Mayor Robert Whitehorn had met with NEC regarding prior work. Sullivan recommended putting the project out to bid to ensure the ditch work meets the town’s expectations. Alderman Thomas O' Dell moved to advertise for bids; Alderman Sullivan seconded. The council voted unanimously to advertise for bids and directed Recorder-Treasurer Nanette Barnes to prepare a bid packet and place it in the newspaper.
In the March departmental report, Avoca Fire & Rescue recorded 54 calls for service. Recorder-Treasurer Barnes said she and Fire Chief Elliott discussed that many Avoca addresses are not sufficiently visible to emergency medical and fire services; Chief Elliott will provide information to the town so materials can be mailed to residents to improve 911 address visibility.
Park updates included completed tree and water plantings at the Steam Whistle Depot; tables and benches will be ordered after the farmers market season. Alderman Thomas O' Dell asked that a new porta-potty be moved because of aesthetic concerns and said he would build a wooden facade at his expense if the town pays to relocate it. Ben Craig, who reported on a bike-race series, said the first race went well with no complaints. Recorder-Treasurer Barnes also announced the farmers market will open April 27 at 8 a.m. with nine vendor applications received as of March 31.
Council discussion also covered the Transportation Alternatives Program/Avoca Heritage Trail; Alderman Kathy Hansen suggested looking for additional grants and Alderman Jay King was asked to contact Elizabeth Bowen about options. The council decided to table further discussion of the trail at this time.
