Avoca council approves zoning-book revisions, appoints Kim Whitehorn to planning board

On April 9, 2019, the Avoca town council unanimously approved updates to the town Zoning Book and appointed Kim Whitehorn to serve on the Planning and Board of Adjustment committees.
Alderman Jordan Sullivan moved to accept the updated zoning book changes; Alderman Kathy Hansen seconded the motion, which passed on a roll-call vote with all aldermen voting yes. The council directed staff to draft an ordinance to put the revisions — including misdemeanor provisions — into effect.
James (Jim) Mills, chair of the Planning Commission, told the council the commission is also rewriting its by-laws, exploring options for a wastewater system, and considering a 5–10–15–20-year plan for the town. Attorney Edwin McClure advised that appointing Kim Whitehorn would not create a conflict of interest; Alderman Kathy Hansen moved to appoint Whitehorn, seconded by Alderman Thomas O' Dell, and the motion carried unanimously.
Planning Commission business also noted that its by-laws would be reviewed at an April 16 meeting and that the Board of Adjustment approved a variance on Smith Ridge Road and a lot split on Tucks Chapel Road at its March 19 meeting.
The Planning Commission’s next meeting was set for April 16, and the board-of-adjustment by-laws were slated for approval on May 21.
