Sanitation district working to buy Holland site; director previews staffing change, grants and 2027 budget timeline

District staff told the board they are negotiating to buy the property in Holland where the sanitation facility is located. District Director Carla Striegler-Winner told the Dubois County Solid Waste Management District Board on May 18 that staff are working with the current landowner to purchase the property in Holland where the sanitation district operates, which would allow the district to remain at the same site.
Carla also reviewed the district's 2025 activity and confirmed that the 2025 Annual Financial Report was filed with the State of Indiana. During review of internal controls and board roles she certified that new board member Ryan Craig completed his required internal controls certification.
On staffing, Carla informed the board that the district's current driver is retiring effective June 5 and that she is actively working to fill the position. She told members the draft 2027 budget will be completed between June 5 and June 8 so the board can review it before the June 15 meeting.
The director provided a grants update, saying there were no new updates for two listed state grant applications: the IDEM Waste Tire Grant 2025 and the IDEM Community Recycling Grant Program (CRGP), both noted as in process in the minutes. Carla also reviewed outreach and program events scheduled for the coming months, including a Hike and Learn at the Farmers Market/Riverwalk on June 6, Hoosier Riverwatch at Patoka on June 17 and participation at the July 4-H Fair.
The board received the operational and program updates with no recorded motions tied to the property discussions or grant applications during the May 18 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:16 a.m.
