DOT backs Webs Mills demonstration; Safe Streets committee to use Urban SDX traffic data

The Select Board heard an update June 16 from Safe Streets chair Ryan Newan on a suite of pedestrian-safety projects, most notably a DOT-supported demonstration at the Webs Mills intersection.
Newan said Maine DOT supplied a 52-page concept package endorsing a four-way stop demonstration and has committed $16,000 in materials, including solar "stop ahead" and flasher-equipped stop signs. The committee will work with a designer and contractor, and staff will coordinate community engagement and scheduling, Newan said.
The committee also described plans to adopt Urban SDX, a software platform that aggregates anonymized GPS-based speed and volume data. Newan said Urban SDX will allow the town to measure speeds, evaluate 85th/95th percentile speeds, and break data into incremental roadway segments so the committee can prioritize corridors such as Pine Hill, Libby Road and Pike's Corner.
Town staff confirmed they will coordinate training and share the data with residents before proposing physical changes. The board and speakers emphasized community outreach and a workshop approach before installing measures that can be controversial, such as speed bumps.
The committee said Quaker Ridge work is underway and that sign installation and pavement markings for other projects will follow once contractors and schedules are confirmed.
The next procedural steps are design and contractor procurement for the Webs Mills demonstration and a public engagement sequence to review DOT materials and the Urban SDX data.
