Several community representatives used the March 1 La Puente City Council meeting to thank the city for financial and facility support that they said expanded youth programming and competitive opportunities.
A public commenter told the council the city’s $4,000 grant to La Puente High School helped the school’s color guard program reach a higher competitive division and place first at recent competitions. “So I just wanna say, thank you so much for the approval of the grant of $4,000...from the bottom of my heart,” the speaker said, noting the funds offset costs for uniforms and show concepts.
Kimberly Shiklin, representing the Warrior IMC Booster team, said the grant supports students’ confidence and participation by reducing financial barriers. Eric Sanchez, president of Guros Judo Club, described program growth — about 100 active athletes month‑to‑month and 350–400 people served annually — and said the club operates the Golden State Open (May 22–24 at the Los Angeles Convention Center), a large tournament that awards Team USA qualifying points.
Frank, speaking for the Lopeti Community Foundation, announced an annual spring carnival (April 9–11) that raises funds for youth leagues and said the La Puente Community Foundation was selected as the 2026 nonprofit of the year for Assembly District 56. A resident identified as Martha asked the council to recognize two residents who completed the Los Angeles Marathon and announced a scholarship gala on April 11 at the La Puente Valley Woman’s Club with ticket and table prices discussed.
Council members and staff praised volunteers and maintenance crews for keeping parks active and well maintained, and noted partnerships with school districts and other agencies to maximize facility use. No formal council action was taken on these presentations; several items were informational or event announcements.
