Students from La Puente High School and Bassett High School participated in Project LEAD events and addressed the City Council on Feb. 24, framing civic engagement as a responsibility that begins early.
"Civic engagement doesn't start when you become an adult," Diego Novello, representing La Puente High School, told the council, describing how Project LEAD encouraged students from elementary through high school to learn about local government, communication with law enforcement and volunteer opportunities.
Council members and staff praised the effort as a growing partnership between the city and local school districts. One councilmember said Project LEAD had expanded over five years to include elementary, middle and high schools and that other nearby cities had expressed interest in replicating the program.
The council also presented certificates of recognition to the La Puente High School varsity football team and announced a discretionary fund check for the school's cheer program; staff confirmed fees for a Little League parade were waived under a separate street use agreement.
Council members asked students to continue taking what they learned back to their schools and families and thanked public safety partners and school police for participating in workshops that accompanied the conference.
