Parks staff report storm cleanup, pool mechanical failures and a spike in ranger engagement

Parks department staff reported on June 16 that crews are continuing storm cleanup work, some park roads remain closed, and a pool facility remains offline after an unexplained mechanical failure.

When asked for a report, Jeremy Jameson (staff) said the department has been "running full speed" through a busy summer season and described extensive forestry cleanup after recent storms; buildings and grounds staff mobilized quickly to remove hazardous limbs and debris. Jameson credited staff and contractors for restoring power and avoiding larger incidents, saying, "I was like, 'Oh, wow. That's fantastic,'" after a contractor brought power back on during an event.

The board heard that Pieran Pool has not yet reopened after staff reported water gushing into the pump room and repeated equipment failures; a staff member named Nathan has been working long hours to diagnose the issue. Swim lessons originally scheduled for June were postponed to July because of mechanical problems.

Staff also reported progress on a capital project with a ceremonial groundbreaking and a planned ribbon-cutting on Aug. 8, and said rangers moved to the Woodlon Nature Center to expand coverage. Ranger statistics for May showed large increases: parkour activities were reported at 6,81 in May versus 2,451 in April (a 148% increase as presented in the transcript) and ranger engagements rose to 6,227 from 2,832 in April. The ranger team logged graffiti removal, removal of large debris items and responses to reports of loose dogs; one incident of shattered tennis-court lights in mid-May was reported repaired.

The board had no further questions and took no additional action beyond receiving the reports.
