Norwich Township joins AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and seeks joint planning with Hilliard

Norwich Township’s Board of Trustees approved a resolution on April 21 authorizing the Township to join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, enabling access to technical assistance and potential financial support for projects that support older residents.

The resolution authorizes the Township Administrator, or designee, to sign membership agreements, pursue grant funding for initiatives such as a community needs assessment, and to make good-faith efforts to coordinate with neighboring jurisdictions, including the City of Hilliard, the City of Columbus and Franklin County. The Board separately approved a joint proclamation with the City of Hilliard to coordinate age-friendly planning.

Trustee Kelli Arthur Hykes expressed enthusiasm for the partnership and the opportunities it provides to plan for residents of all ages; Trustees Brian Rothenberg and Trish Barker joined her in supporting the measure, which the Board approved unanimously. The resolution packet in meeting materials includes background language citing U.S. Census projections about the aging population and urges intergovernmental cooperation to maximize funding competitiveness and avoid duplicate planning efforts.

The Administrator or designee is authorized to pursue grant funding for age-friendly initiatives and the resolution encourages, but does not require, joint applications or coordinated proposals with neighboring jurisdictions when reasonable and in the Township’s interest. Trustees said they expect further staff work to identify specific projects and funding opportunities following membership.
